Ukraine calls for boycott of COP29 if Putin attends

The international community should avoid the COP29 climate summit in Azerbaijan if Russian President Vladimir Putin participates. Ambassador of Ukraine to the EU Vsevolod Chentsov told POLITICO.

"We must apply pressure, and our partners must make it clear to Azerbaijan that if Putin is there, they will not come," Chentsov said.

Earlier, the Kremlin reported that Putin is considering participating in the summit.

Chentsov noted that Putin's arrest warrant should be enough to disrupt Putin's presence at a major diplomatic event.

Ukraine urged Brazil, which will host the G20 summit next month, to arrest the Russian president.

A senior EU official told POLITICO that the Kremlin should not derail the landmark climate event. Organizers hope it will create a new, more ambitious financial goal to help developing countries fight climate change.
