In the Rafik Hariri International Airport area, several powerful explosions thundered on Friday night in the southern outskirts of Beirut.
Sources close to Hezbollah told AFP that the Israeli army carried out at least 11 strikes on the group's facilities. BBC reports.
"Israel has hit the southern suburbs 11 times in a row," said the interlocutor of the agency. Lebanon's National News Agency said "more than 10 consecutive strikes were recorded, making it one of the heaviest attacks on Beirut's southern suburbs."
The roar of the strikes could be heard in the mountainous regions outside Beirut. The Israel Defense Forces did not comment on the strikes but earlier called on civilians in southern Beirut to evacuate. The target of the strikes in the direction of Beirut could be Hashim Safi al-Din, the cousin of the slain leader of Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah.
He has been named as a possible successor to Nasrallah as the group's leader. It is not known if he was injured in the strikes.
