Switzerland and Italy are redrawing the border

Due to melting glaciers and changing mountain ranges, Switzerland and Italy are reshaping the map.

Part of the area affected by the changes runs along the slopes and foothills of the Matterhorn, one of Europe's highest peaks and home to one of the most popular ski resorts.

Glacial or snow-free mountain ranges mainly define the border between the two countries. Still, in recent years, the dramatic reduction in glacier size has caused these natural boundaries to shift.

Switzerland officially approved the border change agreement last week. Italy has not yet ratified the deal.

According to the latest measurements published in September last year, in 2023, Switzerland's glaciers lost 4% of their volume, which is still not a record figure. In 2022, the glacier was larger by 6%.
