Washington officials have increasingly publicly praised Kiev's surprise incursion into Russian territory, as Ukraine has managed, to embarrass Putin, undermine the Kremlin's strategy and seize large swaths of territory along the border. Writes Politico.
The newspaper recalls that President Joe Biden stated that Ukraine's advance on Russian territory has put Moscow in a difficult position, while acknowledging that the United States is negotiating with Kiev as the operation continues.
"It creates a real dilemma for Putin, and we are in direct, constant contact with the Ukrainians," Biden said.
Words of support for Ukraine were also voiced by other US officials.
Politico recalled that Senator Richard Blumenthal stated that US military officials were "impressed and a little puzzled" by the Ukrainian operation "because they did it so well."
Michael McCall, the chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the House of Representatives, praised the authorities of Ukraine.
"I think this is the message of the Ukrainians: when you give us what it takes to win, we can win."
