NBC News reports that the court found US Senator Robert Menendez guilty of corruption. He will be imprisoned on October 29.
The charge also includes receiving bribes in cash and gold bars in favor of Egypt and Qatar.
In a conversation with journalists near the court building, Menendez stated that he was deeply disappointed by this decision and expressed hope that the appeal of the verdict would be practical.
"I have never violated my public oath," he said, not answering whether he would resign.
Menendez was indicted on 16 counts, including bribery, extortion, acting as a foreign agent, obstruction of justice, and several other counts. He pleads not guilty.
