Von der Leyen seeks to manage EU financial flows

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has said she wants greater personal control over a third of EU spending. According to POLITICO, an internal commission document sets out how reform of the EU's poorer funding will be handled by a department under Leyen's direct control.

The so-called cohesion policy is currently managed by the European Commission's Department of the Regions. This department works with local authorities in each country and accounts for around €400 billion in the EU's seven-year budget.
