The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan responded to Borell

Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, Ayhan Hajizadeh, responded to the statements of the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borell. The latter, let's remind, in response to the questions of the members of the European Parliament, called on Azerbaijan to release the Armenian prisoners and ensure the rights of the Armenians who left the Karabakh region.

Hajizadeh described Borell's statements as an attempt to please Armenians. "Azerbaijan, as a humanitarian gesture, by its obligations under international humanitarian law, released and repatriated more than 200 detained Armenians who were prisoners of war or were considered detainees after the 2020 war."

Referring to the detention of the former leaders of Nagorno-Karabakh held in Azerbaijan, Hajizadeh said that they have been charged and an investigation is underway. He reminded us that these persons can be kept in custody until the end of the investigation and, if necessary until the punishment is served.

"At this critical moment, Azerbaijan expects the EU to refrain from prejudicial statements that undermine peace efforts in the region," Hajizadeh summed up his speech.
