Three EU diplomats told "POLITICO" that EU leaders failed to agree on Monday night to confirm Ursula von der Leyen for another term as president of the European Commission, despite assurances in recent days from French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz that they were close to a deal.
"There is no agreement tonight," European Council President Charles Michel told reporters late Monday after the leaders' dinner.
