Germany blocks new EU sanctions against Russia

Citing diplomats in Brussels, the independent DPA and AFP reported on Thursday, June 13, that the German government is delaying negotiations on a new package of EU sanctions against Russia, which was supposed to be approved at the beginning of the G7 summit.

In particular, Germany calls for limiting or even eliminating the provision of liability for subsidiaries in case of violation of sanctions on certain products because otherwise, "German companies may be held liable." The German government also sees some reporting requirements as unnecessary and advocates measures restricting the use of the Financial Messaging System (SPFS), the Russian equivalent of SWIFT.
