Modi has won, but the party has lost

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared victory in India's national elections on Tuesday evening, but his goal of getting a majority of votes fell short.

Modi is preparing to form a government with the help of his allies in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). This is Modi's third consecutive term and a milestone that makes him one of India's most successful politicians since independence. But Modi's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party failed to get the 272 seats needed for an absolute majority in parliament, forcing them to depend on coalition partners to form a government. Modi's alliance collectively won 292 seats, of which his BJP alone won 240.
