On May 24, the Council of the European Union approved the new Schengen Borders Code, a list of EU rules related to managing internal and external borders and regulations governing border control of persons crossing the EU's external borders, reports the department's press service. The reform plays a vital role in making the Schengen zone more stable against current and future external border crises.
"The regulation establishes the possibility of taking pan-European measures that restrict the entry of third-country nationals to the EU in a large-scale health emergency. It also introduces a relocation procedure to help cope with the secondary movement of migrants (from one member state to another) and offers solutions for migration instrument situations. Clarifying the rules regarding the repeated introduction of border control will ensure that it remains an extreme measure," the press service clarified.
