The USA may impose sanctions on the leaders of Georgia

A bill to impose sanctions on Georgia politicians responsible for passing the Foreign Agents Act could be introduced in the US Congress on Monday. This was reported by the European edition of "Politico" newspaper, citing the revealed project. A draft of the bill, seen by Politico, contains a warning that the ruling Georgian Dream party is "increasingly, unfortunately, pursuing a policy of appeasement with Russia as part of a more illiberal turn." The bill adds that Tbilisi "openly attacks the US and other Western democracy-promoting organizations, as well as local and international political society, while strengthening ties, particularly with Russia and China."

As part of efforts to "protect and strengthen democracy," the bill plans to impose sanctions on government officials and other individuals who are "materially responsible for undermining or violating democracy, human rights, or security in Georgia." It would impose visa bans on politicians and their families responsible for passing "foreign agent legislation" against NGOs and media that receive more than 20% of their funding from abroad.

The sanctions will also apply to Georgian law enforcement and security services that have been cracking down on protests against the Foreign Agents Law.
