The Economist reported that Macron gave an interview after delivering a keynote address last week in which he said Europe was "mortal" and could "die" because of the threat posed by Russian aggression after the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
"I don't rule anything out because we are facing someone who doesn't rule anything out either," Macron said when asked if he agreed with the comments that shocked the whole of Europe earlier this year that he was not ruling out a Western sending troops to Ukraine.
Macron stated that if Russia decides to go ahead, they will all have to ask the question "about sending troops." He called the refusal to rule out such a move "a strategic alarm for his partners." "Who can claim that Russia will stop there? "What will the security of other neighboring countries, Moldova, Romania, Poland, Lithuania, and others, be?" Macron asked.
