Western banks paid more than 800 million euros in taxes to the Kremlin in one year

The Financial Times newspaper reports that the most prominent Western banks in Russia paid more than 800 million euros in taxes to the Kremlin last year, four times more than before the war, despite promises to minimize Russian exposure.

The seven largest European banks with assets in Russia—Raifeisen Bank International, UniCredit, ING, Commerzbank, Deutsche Bank, Intesa Sanpaolo, and OTP - reported a total of more than 3 billion euros in 2023 profit. That profit tripled from 2021 and came in part from funds banks can't get out of the country.
