"Defense and military policy should become the core of European politics, one of the cornerstones of the European project," said Josep Borrell, head of the EU diplomatic service, at a conference in Brussels.
"Defence, in the most direct sense, should be the heart of European policy, possibly one of the cornerstones of the European project. The American defense umbrella that protected Europe during the Cold War may soon close, depending on who ends up in the White House. Therefore, the EU should rely only on itself in defense. The importance of NATO remains, but a European component must appear within NATO," Borell said.
