US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken spoke with President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan today, according to the press release of Matthew Miller, the spokesperson of the US State Department.
According to the release, Blinken reaffirmed the importance of bilateral relations between the United States and Azerbaijan and emphasized the growth of partnership initiatives, including energy and climate priorities.
The State Secretary and Aliyev discussed the importance of advancing the peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia, which will benefit the entire region economically. The Secretary of State emphasized that there can be no justification for increasing tension on the border and warned that aggressive actions and rhetoric from any side will undermine the prospects of peace.
Blinken also reaffirmed the need for Azerbaijan to fulfill its international obligations and commitments related to human rights and fundamental freedoms and called for the release of those unjustly arrested.
