The prestigious American anti-corruption organization Freedom House published the report "Freedom in the World" referring to the armed conflicts of 2023, talking about the displacement of the Armenian population from Nagorno-Karabakh, the growth of authoritarianism in the world, the ruling regimes of Azerbaijan and Russia.
It specifically wrote: "In September, the Azerbaijani regime's siege of Nagorno-Karabakh led to the dissolution of local government bodies and the forced displacement of more than 120,000 Armenians in what many foreign observers described as ethnic cleansing. Baku's military offensive followed a nine-month blockade of the Lachin Corridor, the area's only land route to the outside world. because of this, the residents of Nagorno-Karabakh had difficulty in obtaining basic necessities: food, medical supplies and fuel. For almost three decades, the ethnic Armenian population has been at the center of the intractable conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The 2020 offensive benefited Baku greatly, and Moscow's invasion of Ukraine in 2022 limited Russian peacekeeping capabilities, and Azerbaijani forces slowly tightened their grip on what remained of the enclave. Baku can look north for inspiration to the example of the Kremlin's illegal seizure of Crimea from Ukraine."
