The European Parliament discussed strengthening relations between the European Union and Armenia on Tuesday, February 27, in Strasbourg. "We are witnessing a historic moment in relations between the EU and Armenia. They have never been so strong," said Juta Urpilainen, European Commissioner for International Partnerships. According to him, Brussels's priority is to contribute to the stability of Armenia "so that it can independently make its foreign policy choices." For this purpose, the European Union is developing cooperation with Armenia in defense and security, including through the European Peace Fund, and increasing economic investments.
"The road ahead may be difficult," warned the European Commissioner, "Armenia's previous decisions, which led to political, economic, and security dependence, cannot be overcome overnight." However, Urpilainen noted that, among other things, the dialogue with the EU on the liberalization of the visa regime will serve as an impetus for further reforms in the country. The European Commission is currently considering ways to launch it.
