The US opposes Israel's creation of a "buffer zone" in Gaza

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken has stated that the US will not support Israel in creating "buffer zones" in Gaza permanently, which would significantly reduce the size of the Palestinian territory. "When it comes to the permanent status of Gaza in the future, we have clearly stated and remain of the same mind that we will not invade its territory," Blinken said it at a news conference in Abuja, Nigeria.

Blinken added, however, that "transitional security measures" may be needed to allow Israelis who fled the Gaza Strip after October 7 to return. Blinken also argued that Gazans who fled their homes should be allowed to return, and Palestinians should be able to govern themselves.
