Estonian authorities have refused to extend Metropolitan Yevgeny of the Russian Orthodox Church's right of residence, considering it a threat to the country's security. Yevgeny (Valery Reshetnikov), a Russian citizen and head of the local metropolitan of the Russian Orthodox Church in Estonia, submitted documents to renew his residence permit, which was denied. He must leave the country after February 6, when his current residence status expires.
"The state has decided to deny the extension because Reshetnikov, in his public activities, including public speeches, supports the actions of the aggressor and has not changed his behavior despite previous warnings," said Indrek Aru, head of the border protection bureau of Pikhyan Prefecture.
