Nicaragua's government announced on Sunday that it had released a prominent Catholic bishop and 18 other clerics jailed under President Daniel Ortega's crackdown. They were handed over to the Vatican authorities.
Bishop Orlando Alvarez and other clerics were arrested more than a year ago as part of a crackdown between Ortega and the Catholic Church and a crackdown on the church. They were accused of supporting mass civil protests in 2018, which Ortega said were a conspiracy to topple him.
The previously imprisoned priests were quickly transported by plane to Rome.
