Thousands of Danes gathered in Copenhagen to celebrate the start of King Frederik X's reign. Before that, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark abdicated in favor of her eldest son.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen proclaimed Frederik King of Denmark, Greenland, and the Faroe Islands from the balcony of Christiansborg Palace, pronouncing "Long live King Frederik the Tenth" three times.
From that same balcony, Frederick then gave his first speech. "I hope to become the unifying king. It's a problem I've been to all my life. It's a challenge I take on with pride, respect, and joy."
