Referring to his family, the DPA news agency reports that legendary German football player Franz Beckenbauer died at 78.
Beckenbauer became the 1974 World and 1972 European champions as part of the German national team. At the club level, he played more than 400 matches for Bayern Munich from 1964 to 1977.
