Queen Margaret II of Denmark has announced that she will abdicate the throne on January 14, 2024, and hand it over to her son, Prince Frederik.
Margaret, 83, has reigned for 52 years and has been Europe's only reigning queen since the death of Elizabeth II.
He made the surprise announcement during a message broadcast on Danish television, citing his age and health problems.
