Politico presents details from yesterday's heated discussion on Ukraine's membership negotiations at the EU summit. At one point, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz asked Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to leave the room, according to Politico.
According to the publication, the three-hour discussions ended due to Orbán's position, after which the German Chancellor suggested the Hungarian Prime Minister leave the room and drink coffee. An EU source told reporters that Orbán temporarily left the hall where the vote took place.
The EU's decision to start negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova was vital. It was so crucial that Council President Charles Michel took the unusual step of appearing before dozens of accredited journalists in person and announcing that it was a "historic moment."
Brussels' message to Kyiv, Moscow, and Washington was clear. The EU will continue to support Ukraine and bring it closer to the bloc, even as the US struggles to get its aid package through Congress and Ukraine to break the stalemate on the battlefield.
