The US and Kazakhstan signed a memorandum of cooperation on the former military training camp

The US Department of Defense's Threat Reduction Agency and Kazakhstan's National Nuclear Center have signed a memorandum to jointly address the "ongoing risks" of the spread of nuclear and radioactive waste from the former Semipalatinsk training camp. The US Embassy in Kazakhstan reports this.

The "Semipalatinsk" training ground is the largest nuclear test site in the world; it was closed on August 29, 1991. In 1949–1989, 458 atmospheric and underground explosions were carried out. The area affected by the tests exceeds 30 hectares.
