The United States has decided to close its consulate in the southeastern city of Adana indefinitely amid protests, the embassy in Ankara said on its website.
On Wednesday night, in several cities in Turkey, protests were held near the Israeli diplomatic missions in connection with the situation in the Gaza Strip. In Adana, protesters threw stones and Molotov cocktails at the building of the U.S. consulate, Turkish media reports.
"The U.S. Consulate in Adana will be closed to visitors until further notice. U.S. citizens may reschedule their appointments and will be served at the U.S. Embassy in Ankara," a security notice posted on the embassy's website said.
U.S. government employees in Turkey have been instructed to minimize travel and avoid traveling to the consular area of the consulate in Adana.
