Senator Ben Cardin, the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman, stated the need to support Armenia and review military aid and security cooperation with Azerbaijan.
"After nearly a year of horrific siege, President Aliyev finally used military force to take control of the Nagorno-Karabakh region, effectively destroying its Armenian population and rich history. As the world continues to grapple with Azerbaijan's planned and deliberate campaign of ethnic cleansing, we must prioritize supporting displaced Armenians and holding Azerbaijan accountable.
Looking ahead, we must take steps to ensure that Azerbaijan does not have a military push for further territorial gains, including strongly condemning inflammatory rhetoric. The United States must stop providing security assistance to Azerbaijan until it ends this brutal campaign. The United States and the international community must also renew our commitment to documenting war crimes and atrocities and continue to support efforts to repatriate prisoners of war, many of whom are being held in Azerbaijan.
Finally, we must show solidarity with the Armenian people, especially now that Azerbaijan and Turkey are discussing the Zangezur Corridor. We must increase humanitarian assistance to ethnic Armenians who have left Nagorno-Karabakh. The United States should also continue to support the democratic reforms that the Armenian leadership has undertaken in recent years, including efforts to promote greater transparency, good governance, and economic cooperation with the United States and Western Europe."
