Last year, the number of people over 100 in Italy reached a record high. The Italian Civil Service notes that the number of people over 100 has tripled since the beginning of the century and reached almost 22,000 as of January of this year, most of whom are women.
Births fell to 393,000, the lowest in 150 years since Italian unification.
