As a result of the explosion, 16 people were injured; 7 were extremely serious, and nine were severe.
Paris police spokeswoman Lubna Atta said it was too early to talk about the source of the fire and she could not confirm reports that the fire was caused by a gas explosion.
Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin called on people to avoid the area around Saint-Jacques street on the left bank of Paris, so as not to interfere with the ambulance service and firefighters.
