Last year, according to SIPRI, Russia's military expenditures increased by 9.2%, reaching about 86.4 billion dollars. It comprised 4.1% of the country's GDP (third in the world after the USA and China).
Figures published by Russia at the end of 2022 show that defense spending was already 34% higher than the 2021 budget plans. "The difference shows that the invasion of Ukraine cost Russia much more than expected," said Lucy Bero-Soudro, director of the SIPRI Program on Military Spending and Arms Production.
