Several critical allies of Ukraine, including the United States, are considering imposing an almost complete ban on exports to Russia. Writes Bloomberg. G7 officials are discussing the idea ahead of the G7 leaders' summit in Japan in May. It is assumed that, as a result, similar prohibitive measures will be applied by the EU member states. "The proposal is still under discussion and may change," Bloomberg notes.
Such an approach could completely change the current sanctions regime, prohibiting the sale of anything to Russia except a small list of permitted goods. Under current rules, the sanctions regime against Moscow works precisely the opposite way - any export is allowed by default, and restrictions apply only in exceptional cases.
