Merkel blocked the membership of Georgia and Ukraine to NATO

The former Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel, spoke against the membership of Ukraine and Georgia to NATO during the alliance summit in 2008 and convinced the other allies. Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov said this in a conversation with the Spanish newspaper La Razon.

"The West has long lived in the dogma of not provoking Russia," Reznikov noted. According to him, during the NATO summit in Bucharest in 2008, the acceptance of Ukraine and Georgia into the military alliance was realistic, "The Americans were in favor, as were most of the Europeans. It was German Chancellor Angela Merkel who spoke against it and convinced the rest," said Reznikov.
