Macron and Von der Leyen arrived in China

French President Emmanuel Macron arrived in China today right before the head of the EU, Ursula von der Leyen. The two European leaders seek to smooth relations with a critical economic partner, addressing thorny issues such as the conflict in Ukraine and trade risks.

Von der Leyen has yet to travel to China since becoming president of the European Commission, as China's strict epidemic controls have forced all diplomatic meetings to be held online.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry announced earlier that Xi Jinping and the French President would discuss deepening cooperation and major international issues. The Elysee Palace said Macron would spend 6-7 hours consulting with the Chinese leader.
