On April 3, five UN Special Procedures mandated experts issued a statement calling on the government of Azerbaijan to take urgent measures to ensure freedom and security of movement through the Lachin Corridor.
UN human rights experts, in particular, stated that the Lachin Corridor is the only transportation link connecting Nagorno Karabakh to Armenia and the outside world and has tremendous humanitarian significance. The blockade has disrupted the supply of food, medicine, fuel, and other essential goods to about 120,000 people living in Nagorno-Karabakh. The humanitarian situation has worsened due to periodic interruptions in gas supply, which has disrupted the operation of medical facilities. Educational institutions were also unable to function and ceased operations.
Experts have expressed grave concern that the long-term blockade of the only road connecting Nagorno-Karabakh to the outside world may lead to severe humanitarian consequences for the population and violation of their rights.
