How and to which countries does China lend?

According to a study published by the World Bank, China spent 240 billion dollars from 2008-2021 to support 22 developing countries. These are the loans spent on implementing "Belt & Road" infrastructure.

According to a report by World Bank researchers, almost 80% of the "bailout" loans were granted between 2016 and 2021, primarily to middle-income countries, including Argentina, Mongolia, and Pakistan.

Argentina received the most with $111.8 billion, followed by Pakistan with $48.5 billion and Egypt with $15.6 billion. Nine countries received less than $1 billion.

Loans are mainly concentrated in middle-income countries, which amount to approx. 80% of lending, as they represent Chinese banks' balance sheets, while low-income countries are offered grace periods and extended repayment periods.
