At least 59 people, including an infant, died when a boat full of migrants sank off the coast of southern Italy.
The shipwreck happened near Steccato Di Cutro, a seaside resort on the east coast of Calabria, which forms the tip of the "Italian shoe."
Italian authorities have launched a large-scale search and rescue operation on land and at sea.
"At the moment, 80 people have been rescued, including those who managed to reach the shore after the shipwreck," the coast guard said in a statement.
It is reported that the ship, on which there were about 100 people, was crushed while trying to go ashore.
