Azerbaijan launched an environmental attack against Armenia; Politico

The prestigious European periodical Politico referred to the actions of Azerbaijani "eco-activists" and the blockade of Nagorno-Karabakh. The magazine also referred to the lawsuit filed by Armenia against Azerbaijan in the international court regarding the pollution of the territories, the violation of the Bern Convention, and the so-called environmental problems.

Politico periodical, in particular, writes: "Azerbaijan is opening a new front against Armenia, which includes not tanks and missiles, but legal documents and environmental damage claims... It is not the first time Azerbaijan has used the environmental issue as a political tool to get compensation or make territorial claims."

Azerbaijan's claim against RA is the first interstate arbitration under the CE Bern Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Environments.

"In the last two years, we have discovered shocking evidence of environmental damage in the territories liberated in the 2020 war," Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister Elnur Mammadov told Politico. "We have two goals. First, to achieve legal recognition of these violations and attract the attention of the international community; secondly, compensations and restoration of damage," Mammadov noted.

Politico periodical also spoke with the Armenian side and presented Armenia's position. The office of Armenia's representative for international legal affairs confirmed to Politico that it had received a notice of arbitration under the Berne Convention. Still, it argued that the lawsuit was against the treaty's spirit. "We regret that Azerbaijan has chosen a competitive process under an international document, the purpose of which is to promote cooperation between states to preserve wild flora and fauna and their natural habitats," the representatives of the Armenian side said.

"Armenia is concerned because Azerbaijan's taking a controversial path for reasons unrelated to the goals of the Berne Convention may hurt the region's environment, which has been significantly affected by Azerbaijan's aggressive wars in the last two years," the representatives of the Armenian side added.

"Several international observers claim that the Azerbaijani government is leading the protesters, given that few have any obvious evidence of environmental activism and the state often suppresses domestic political protests. Baku, however, denies all that," the article published by the periodical said.

However, Karabakh Armenians claim that Azerbaijan is using environmental issues to pressure them and strengthen Baku's control over the region.
