American actress Angelina Jolie has left the post of Special Representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, which she held since 2001, according to a statement posted on the UNHCR website.
"After more than 20 years of dedicated work with the UN Refugee Agency, protecting the rights of forcibly displaced people around the world, Angelina Jolie is stepping down from her role as Special Envoy to focus on a broader range of humanitarian and human rights issues," the document said.
The organization adds that Angelina Jolie will continue to work towards creating a more equal, fair, and inclusive international system.
"In the coming years, I will continue to do everything I can to support refugees and other displaced people. After 20 years in the UN system, I think it's time for me to work differently, interacting directly with refugees and local organizations and helping to find solutions," the actress said.
