Modern slavery in Cambodia. What do you need to know?

Over the past 18 months, casinos, hostel blocks, luxury hotels, and office complexes, many linked to powerful politicians, have become hotbeds of crypto, investment, and gaming scams.

The promise of work lures people from all over the world, then forced to stay and work under threats of beatings, torture, and electrocution. Over time, Cambodian authorities began to deny reports of trafficking and detention and interpreted them as labor disputes.

The Global Justice Project ranks Cambodia among the worst in the world for the rule of law.

According to survivors and their family members, detainees who contact the authorities often disappear or face reprisals. Moreover, those who escape and go to the police are returned to their captors.
