Germany fined Telegram $5 million

Germany announced on Monday that it had imposed a fine of 5.125 million euros ($5 million) against the operators of the Telegram messaging app for failing to comply with German law. German officials said they had repeatedly failed in their attempts to provide papers to Dubai-based Telegram, despite support from UAE authorities.

Germany's federal police warned earlier this year that the app was becoming an "extremist tool" used by some groups to target politicians, scientists, and doctors to fight them over the coronavirus pandemic.
