Blinken emphasized the importance of discussing the rights and guarantees of the people of Nagorno-Karabakh

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken had a telephone conversation with the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, today.

"The Secretary expressed appreciation for the positive steps taken by Azerbaijan and Armenia to reach a lasting peace agreement, including recent direct talks between foreign ministers and leaders," the State Department said in a statement.

Blinken also welcomed Azerbaijan's October 4 return of 17 Armenian prisoners of war and called on President Aliyev to continue efforts to achieve a peace process.

The Secretary of State reaffirmed the support of the United States, including border demarcation, transportation links, search and identification of missing persons, return of detainees, and other issues.

According to the State Department, Blinken emphasized the importance of discussing the rights and guarantees of the people of Nagorno-Karabakh, as well as the need for both sides to support a ceasefire and focus on a negotiated agreement as the only long-term path to peace.

It should be noted that the US Secretary of State earlier today also had a telephone conversation with RA Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.
