The Chairman of the Standing Committee on Foreign Relations of the National Assembly of Armenia, Sargis Khandanyan, has proposed to the Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Relations of the Milli Mejlis of Azerbaijan to hold a meeting of the committees.
"Armenia and Azerbaijan have reached an agreement on the draft agreement "On the Establishment of Peace and Interstate Relations between the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan," which marks the end of negotiations on the document.
Highlighting our role as parliamentarians directly elected by the people and responsible for protecting their interests, we realize that after signing the agreement, it must be ratified by the parliaments of both countries. As the Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Relations of the National Assembly of Armenia, I have proposed to my colleague, the Chairman of the Committee on Foreign and Interparliamentary Relations of the Milli Mejlis of Azerbaijan, Samad Seyidov, to hold a joint meeting of the committees we head.
This meeting will provide an opportunity to exchange views on the draft peace agreement and its ratification process. Furthermore, it will offer the chance to discuss issues related to the parliament's role in the peace process, stimulating dialogue on the future of inter-parliamentary cooperation, both in bilateral and multilateral parliamentary platforms.
Such an initiative can complement other confidence-building measures our countries undertake and strengthen regional stability. My counterpart in the Milli Mejlis will respond positively, and we will be able to agree on the date, venue, and other necessary details of the meeting. As a venue for the first meeting, we can consider a neutral location on the Armenia-Azerbaijan border."
