Why was Gerasimov appointed commander of the Russian forces in Ukraine?

The American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) believes that the Russian army has not yet managed to capture the city of Solar in the Donetsk region, despite many Russian sources reporting this.

ISW experts also analyze the appointment of Valery Gerasimov, the commander of the Russian troops in Ukraine and the chief general staff of the Russian Armed Forces.

According to them, this decision is meant to solve two main problems of the Kremlin:

  • trying to improve the command system to launch effective military operations

  • to strengthen the positions of the Ministry of Defense against the background of the growing influence of despotic military associations, such as Eugene Prigogine's "Wagner."
Russian President Vladimir Putin may be planning new attacks and has not given up on the maximalist issues of the war in Ukraine.
