Meta is shutting down its Messenger desktop apps for Windows and Mac, the company announced.
Starting on December 15, 2025, users will no longer be able to access the apps; they will be automatically redirected to the Facebook website to use Messenger on the web.
Meta has started to warn users about this change, giving them time to familiarize themselves with other options. For example, Windows users can use the Facebook desktop app, while all Windows and Mac users can use Messenger online through Facebook.com.
The company also encourages users to enable Secure Storage and create a PIN code to keep their message history until they switch to the web version. Once a user starts using Messenger on Facebook.com, their message history will be available across all platforms.
