Artificial intelligence leader OpenAI and chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) have announced a strategic partnership that will see OpenAI, led by Sam Altman, take up to a 10% stake in AMD.
AMD shares surged in premarket trading, up more than 25%, following the announcement of the deal.
The companies said OpenAI will deploy 6 gigawatts of AMD Instinct graphics processors over the coming years, starting with a first phase of 1 gigawatt.
In total, OpenAI’s new infrastructure projects, including the Nvidia and AMD deals, could be worth up to $1 trillion, with each gigawatt estimated to cost around $50 billion.
In addition to AMD, OpenAI is also in talks with Broadcom to build custom chips for its next-generation models.
