Black cars increase the temperature in cities

New research in Lisbon has shown that on hot summer days, black cars can heat the air around them by up to 3.8°C. According to scientists, this significantly enhances the greenhouse effect, with cities becoming considerably warmer than the surrounding rural areas.

In the experiment, scientists compared black and white cars left in the open sun. The results showed that a white vehicle reflects up to 85% of the sun's rays, while a black car reflects only 5-10%. This difference leads to a noticeable warming of the air.

The urban heat island effect is particularly perilous in Europe, where record-breaking heatwaves of more than 40°C have been recorded in recent years. Scientists emphasize that high temperatures not only cause discomfort but also pose significant health risks, particularly for children and older people.

As a solution, it is proposed to more actively apply "whitewashing" strategies, not only for roofs and pavements but also for cars. According to calculations, if dark cars in Lisbon were replaced with light ones, the reflectivity of the city's streets could double, and the air temperature could drop.

This method could become a quick and affordable way to cool cities.
