The largest meteorite from Mars sold for $5.3 million

The largest meteorite ever to reach Earth from Mars has been sold at a special auction held in New York as part of Geek Week. It was sold for $5.3 million, AP reports.

The main event was the sale of a rare dinosaur skeleton, which sold for more than $30 million.

The meteorite, which weighed approximately 25 kilograms and originated from Mars, was discovered in November 2023 in the Sahara Desert of northern Nigeria, Africa. According to scientists, it was ejected from Mars by a powerful explosion and, having traveled more than 225 million kilometers, eventually reached Earth. The stone was named NWA 16788.

Before the auction, experts estimated its value to be between $2 million and $ 4 million. During the auction, the final price reached $4.3 million, and after various commissions, $5.3 million, making it the most expensive meteorite ever sold at auction.
