Reuters reported that Toyota plans to move some GR Corolla sports car production to the United Kingdom, investing about $56 million to build a new assembly line to serve the North American market.
The people said that Toyota has decided to move some of its production out of Japan to use existing production capacity in the United Kingdom and reduce delivery lead times. The company said the decision was unrelated to U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposed tariffs on imported cars.
Earlier this month, the Trump administration agreed to reduce tariffs on up to 100,000 cars imported from the United Kingdom to 10%. At the same time, Japan is pushing to eliminate a 25% tariff on all imported cars from the United States.
Global automakers face challenges from tariffs, different emissions standards, and customer demands in significant markets.
