OpenAI has revised its restructuring plan, deciding that its non-profit parent will continue to control the company. The move will likely limit CEO Sam Altman’s influence over the ChatGPT-based startup.
The announcement follows a flurry of criticism and legal challenges, including a high-profile lawsuit by co-founder and rival Elon Musk. Musk has accused OpenAI of straying from its founding mission of developing artificial intelligence for the benefit of humanity.
“OpenAI was founded as a non-profit; today, it is a non-profit that controls and manages the commercial division, and in the future, it will remain a non-profit, continuing to control the commercial division. That will not change,” Altman said.
OpenAI said that its non-profit parent will continue to control PBC and become its largest shareholder. The company will continue to restructure its commercial division, with more to attract capital to maintain competition in artificial intelligence.
